Solar Fruit Dryer

Here we illustrate the steps in the construction of a small, table-top fruit dryer. (My wife adds, "for a VERY LARGE table!")

We began with a wooden base.

The wooden base was lined with 28-guage galvanized sheet metal. To make clean, straight bends, the sheet metal was clamped between two angle irons.

The side pieces of the lining were placed first, followed by the bottom piece.

For control of air flow through the dryer, a sliding cover with "windows" was made from sheet metal. First the windows were cut out, then the sides were bent upward.

To keep insects out of the dryer, a cover of hardware cloth and window screen was made for the bottom opening.

Window screen was also placed in the air flow control.

To make a groove for the slider, the top and bottom flanges of the air flow control were bent around a piece of angle iron.

The flow of air is controlled by sliding the cover to partially close the windows or to close them completely.

A narrow "umbrella" was made to keep rain out of the open windows.

Brackets of aluminum angle were placed to hold the drying trays.

A piano hinge was used to hold the top.

The frame for the top was cut to conform with profile of the transparent cover.

The transparent cover was sealed to the frame with silicone caulk.

A wooden prop was made to hold the cover open while working inside.

To prevent the cover from being opened too wide and possibly breaking the hinge, a chain was placed on the side opposite the prop.

The trays were assembled from aluminum screen framed with aluminum angle. It was held together with aluminum rivets.

 The wooden pieces

The wooden pieces were made of pressure-treated pine. The dimensions are given in inches. Where more than one piece is required, the number of pieces is given in a circle.
